A soothing melody of laboring, loving, and humans on a remote island. There were no conflicts, no betrayal, or even a slight malice. Everything is moving slowly forward with the courage, sympathy, and honesty. Even Yasuo, he might seem to be bad but he was just a spoiling teenager with a few clumsy tricks.

I read this book once every few years after going through other books in the same category. Like a map which I would need to lay out again in my head and put in the new details from different sources after the last reading. Not a perfect to details history book but Prof. Kim has put a lot of his thought into this piece of work, together with some controversial thinking as people who lived under Nguyen dynasty (the one about Tay Son, or Le Van Duyet). He has a similar standard to Thucydides when it comes to history: you need to separate the stories and put aside all the religious affection; and should not let your emotion lead the way.

Thucydides
This is such an important piece of history and we were lucky that (1) Thucydides has written from the beginning to almost the end (the last 6 years of the war was missing) and (2) Thucydides was the one writing it. From my opinion, what made the book great is Thucydides has scrapped all the religion concepts and ideas out of the facts. He put all his trust onto the verbal stories and scrolls while going as far as fact-checking them between peers. 2500 years ago!

The third story in the book is spectacularly beautiful. It's almost the perfect story of how humanity can be when everyone does care for others. Almost because I'm still pity for the Hatsune's daughter. I'm grateful that this is not a full novel because it might be having more fillers and losing the momentum of the story. It took me 6 days to go through the first two stories (not bad but not amazingly good either), however, the last one had me sitting through in one evening till late night.

Not a spectacularly good novel but an okay one to spend some time into the world of Death Note gain. I kinda like the murder case here with those setups and puzzles but the narration made by Mello doesn't make sense to me at all. He was never the type of making diary or notes about something only to tell stories. He was more of an action on the spot guy. In my opinion, Roger Ruvie suits the role better and he is a man in the background and knowing everybody in Wammy's House. I hope we have more books on the cases mentioned in this book but again I don't recommend Mello as narrator.

Fairly predictable for the first half of the book, especially if you are familiar with his style. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is a boring story. The youth, the romance, and the happy ending are still there but this time we have more people in the pictures with some more, rarely seen before, actions.

A rare book with no biased opinion and full of information. It has everything you would want to know about the game including with anecdotes relating to other games in the series.
